Rosacea is mostly seen in patients who are over the age of 30 and is extremely common in Ireland amongst the Celtic skin type.   The skin condition presents with redness to the skin and oedema, pustules, papules and telangiectasia ( small capillary blood vessels showing).  The condition can be mild with only one of the listed items showing or it can be further advanced with all the features present.

The cause is unknown, but we know that heating foods and drinks have a profound effect on Rosacea. External factors such as wind, sun exposure, temperature/humidity, and cosmetics should also be taken into consideration.

The pH of the body – the acidity at cellular level – is significant in Rosacea.   The build up of metabolic acidosis is a warning sign that certain body organs are also under stress including the skin.  Bare in mind that the skin a major eliminatory organ along with the digestive tract, kidneys and lungs.

If we take the element of stress and there is a lot of anxiety stress in our society at the moment based on fear, this has a direct impact on the immune system.  Research notes that in immuno-supressed patients the prevalence of Rosacea is greater.  When we are stressed, we breathe in a shallow manner.  This leads to a greater amount of the CO2 within the body – CO2 is acidic and oxygen is alkaline.

With medical conditions it is never just one element that is the cause.  Invariably it is a number of factors that come together and in predisposed people the result can be Rosacea
